Family photography on Hampstead Heath
Even though I moved back to my home town of Leighton Buzzard a couple of years ago, I still get booked for family photo shoots on Hampstead Heath, my old stomping ground. It’s a fabulous spot for photos that I have returned to again and again over the years.
One of my favourite shoots over the summer was with this lovely couple, B - their two year old son, 4 month old baby, and gorgeous Labrador. We arranged to meet on the parkway near Kenwood House, where the family spent most of their Sundays. They were about to move out of London and wanted some pictures showing their ‘last walk’ on the Heath.
It was a bright sunny day and Mum and Dad had chosen a quiet spot in the shade, with some wonderful views. I took a bit of time to chat and help everyone warm up before starting to take pictures. B wanted to check out my camera, and was keen to show me his toy sword. We got some playful pictures under the trees before heading out to the Heath to explore.
I always try to make sure my photo shoots are child-led. This means choosing a location where they can have fun explore, and letting them lead the way as much as possible. That way they are less focused on me and the camera, and I can concentrate on capturing those great moments and expressions. The only challenge then is to keep up with them!
B had so much fun and we managed to get some lovely images of his adventure, interactions with his smiley little brother, and plenty of swings, giggles and hugs with Mum and Dad. Very little direction from me was required - a few gentle prompts and suggestions were all that was needed to bring out this family’s magic. Here are a few of my faves…
