“It is the life of the crystal, the architect of the flake, the fire of the frost, the soul of the sunbeam. This crisp winter air is full of it.”
(John Burroughs)
Winter can feel a bit bleak and may not strike you as the ideal time for family photography, but actually it has lots of ingredients for the perfect family photo shoot.
The light can be truly stunning. The sun stays low in the sky, providing a softer, more diffuse light throughout the day, avoiding squinting and harsh shadows. And the shorter days mean that ‘golden hour’ - that warm, flattering light - comes much earlier than in the summer, so you can get the kids home in time for a normal dinner and bedtime routine.
When we’re outside, the colours and textures of winter clothing are incredibly photogenic. Frost and snow create crisp, peaceful backdrops as the trees and fields glisten. But they also bounce soft light back, brightening faces and making eyes sparkle. And as family members cuddle up together to keep warm, your photos will capture those all important tender moments and emotional connections.
With all my sessions there is usually some time indoors too, and of course the cold winter days are the perfect excuse for cozy family photos at home.
I haven’t yet released availability for winter shoots (December, January and February).
