Family photography in Hampstead

I was recently booked by a family who had received a gift voucher for a shoot with me a few years ago. They had never got round to booking, but with the arrival of their beautiful granddaughter 18 months ago, now felt like the perfect time.

Living right by Hampstead Heath, they have one of my absolute favourite locations right on their doorstep, and it was lovely to be back in my old haunting grounds. Although I am very familiar with the Heath, I made time for a recce before arriving at the family’s home. The same location can change so much in terms of its suitability depending on the time of day and the weather.

I am always looking for shade if it’s a bright day, interesting areas for little ones to explore, and a variety of backdrops for portraits and documentary shots. I was able to pick out 3 or 4 spots within easy walking distance, and this advance preparation helped make sure the whole shoot ran smoothly.

Upon arrival I was given a clear brief - nothing too staged, please. This is exactly how I approach family photography - I do give direction, but I keep it light-touch. The real magic comes when you’re interacting and enjoying being with each other. So, more often than not, I am guiding families to focus on each other, not the camera.

As is often the case, it was the little person that really set the pace! We spent the first half hour having fun at home, using window light for some lovely portraits and playful images. Then it was time for a little adventure outside on the Heath, looking for flowers, shoulder carries, and wonderful, squishy family hugs.

This is really what it’s all about for me. Everyone was able to relax, treating our shoot as a family outing full of laughter, play and just being in the moment together. Their love and connection really shines through the pictures. Here are a few of my favourites 😊
