Family photography in Leighton Buzzard
One of my favourite photo shoots over the summer was a joint 80th birthday gift for a local couple, booked by their son (another Simon!). All the family had gathered to celebrate - eleven people spanning three generations, including five teenage grandchildren and a very cute cockapoo. My brief was to capture the family relaxing at home the morning after the birthday celebrations, with some documentary-style photos, and relaxed portraits and group shots.
I offered Simon a quick call ahead of the shoot to discuss a rough plan for our shoot. We agreed a late morning start to allow everyone (teenagers included…) time to get up and running before the photos. I also suggested coming up with a family activity or game - this can be a good way to help everyone relax and draw attention away from the camera.
When I arrived on the day of the shoot, Simon had the inspired idea of bringing out a box of old photos, stretching back to when his octogenarian parents were scarcely older than their grandchildren are now. This was clearly a precious moment for the family as they sat sharing memories and laughing together, and I managed to capture some lovely reactions. We then took a few group photos against the beautiful backdrop of the garden, before heading out for a stroll through the nearby woods - a Sunday family tradition - and some more portraits and documentary photos.
So many of us lead busy, hectic lives, and occasions like this when we get the family all in one place can be few and far between. It was a privilege to be asked to provide a simple record of their time together. This is what family photography is all about for me - portraying the personalities, relationships and connections that make your family special.
Hopefully a few of the images from this shoot can be added to Simon’s box and will be enjoyed in years - perhaps even generations - to come. Here are some of my favourites…
