“It is the life of the crystal, the architect of the flake, the fire of the frost, the soul of the sunbeam. This crisp winter air is full of it.”
(John Burroughs)
Winter can feel like it’s not the ideal time for family photography.
Winter has lots of ingredients for a beautiful family photo shoot. As the days shorten, the sun stays low in the sky, providing a softer, more diffuse light throughout the day. The earlier sunsets means we get ‘golden hour’ - that warm, flattering light - much earlier than in the summer, meaning you can get everyone home in time for a normal dinner and bedtime routine.
When we’re outside, the colours and textures of winter clothing are incredibly photogenic. Frost and snow create crisp, peaceful backdrops as the trees and fields glisten. But they also bounce soft light back, brightening faces and making eyes sparkle. And as family members cuddle up together to keep warm, your photos will capture those all important tender moments and emotional connections.
With all my sessions there is usually some time indoors too, and of course the cold winter days are the perfect excuse for cozy family photos at home. As everyone relaxes in familiar surroundings, it takes the pressure out of the photo shoot, and your pictures
